About Directory

Directory is an app for connecting with fellow humans. No games, no fees, no secrets. We keep things simple to support people on their journey of experiencing the wonderful diversity of human connection.

It’s hard enough to make friends as an adult. Lack of third spaces, the rise of for-profit social media, and the loneliness epidemic in the US are no help. Dating and friending apps have entered the mainstream as a shallow way to combat this without fixing the underlying problems. And its no secret that these apps make money by playing your emotions to keep you scrolling.

While we can’t single-handedly fix what’s driving the loneliness epidemic, we can at least offer a modern way to connect that isn’t trying to sell you something– or sell your data. Directory is not-for-profit and open source. Because profit should have no influence on your social life.

Assortment of relationship tags:asexual, serious, open, kink, swinging, friends-only Its our goal to accomodate all kinds of relationship configurations, and support all of our queer, polyamorous, kinky and open-minded friends. If the built-in filters aren’t enough, our custom, user-contributed tag system allows anyone to add tags that represent their lifestyle.

Custom tags also allows you to add tags for all your favorite fandoms, games, sports and connect with other users on a love you already share.

Meet the Developer

Directory is mostly a one-gal operation. I grew up between Virginia and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Then I graduated with a degree in computer science from UNC Chapel Hill, where I learned to hate modern technology.

And while apps may suck, dating apps have been revolutionary for connecting LGBT people and are now so mainstream that they seem to be here to stay. I wanted to build an alternative that isn’t guided by profit (though I’ll certainly take donations at some point).

Thanks for your support,

Development Status

I began making this app in February of 2026. It now mostly works, but there are a few kinks to work out before I remove the “beta” lable. It is now available on Android and coming soon to iOS!

We are currently working on building a hub in the North Carolina Triangle area! See what you can do to support us and read more about our development status on our blog.

We'd love to hear from you.
